Dancer Reminders for Nutcracker Week!

REMINDERS FOR ALL DANCERS

No food or drink in costume.  No food or drink in the auditorium.   Bringing a water bottle that doesn't leak or spill is a good idea, just make sure to get your drinks after you've changed out of costumes.

NO GUM.  AT ALL.  Sadly, we did have one problem with gum getting on a costume last year.  We don't want that to happen again!

Girls with buns need hair nets over their buns (available at Sally's).  **Buffoons probably don't need hair nets just make sure their little buns are neat.

Party boys, remember your white socks and black shoes.

Soldiers remember black shoes.

You will need performance hair and makeup at all rehearsals and performances next week - please review hair and makeup guidelines.

No nail polish, and if at all possible, no glasses.

Extra hair pins and hairspray should be in your bag.  Snow dancers, bring some safety pins for those sashes.

Nude leotards are a MUST for girls.

Please no walking around in nude leotards.  When you are not in costume, you should have clothes over your leotard.

There will be no changing allowed in the bathrooms.

Please make sure you have clean tights, with no holes or runs in them.  A spare pare to have on hand would be smart.

Monday, take the opportunity to sit (QUIETLY, NO TALKING) in the auditorium to watch any acts that you haven't seen yet!

Wed - Saturday, once in the dressing room, dancers must stay there, no going in and out of the room.  At this school the only dressing room is actually near the entrance door/ticket tables, so this is especially important.

You are expected to be respectful to directors, volunteers, and other dancers.  That means being polite, listening, being where you're supposed to be, following rules, and keeping the backstage room calm and quiet.

REMEMBER:  When you are on the wings of the stage, you need to stay FAR BACK.  Farther than  you think.  The rule is: IF YOU CAN SEE PEOPLE, THEY CAN SEE YOU.  Do not be 'on stage' before you are meant to be on stage.  (Parents please review this with your dancer).

Let your family and friends know that auditorium doors will open at 6:30, ticket sales will start before then, and it would be wise to get their early!

We hope everyone is excited about next week's performances!

NUTCRACKER WEEK OVERVIEW

It's almost here!  NUTCRACKER WEEK!

Here's an overview to give you an idea of how it's going to go next week.
Remember that attendance to all rehearsals/performances next week is MANDATORY.  You may not  miss anything this week.  This is what we've been working for ! :)

MONDAY:  Tech Rehearsal
This year we are holding tech AND dress rehearsals.  If you were involved last year, our "tech" is like last year's dress rehearsal.  Our "dress" is actually going to be a real dress rehearsal and preview performance.

Where: Elk Ridge Middle School
(3659 W 9800 S - it is on the SW corner of Bangerter and 9800 S).
When:  Helping with sets (party scene parents if you can) 5:00, Directors: 5:00
Party Scene: 6:00
Everyone else:  6:30

This rehearsal is still a dress rehearsal and requires full makeup/hair and costumes. This is when photos will be taken, so please look performance ready.

Dancers may stay in the dressing room OR watch in the auditorium on Monday but there is to be NO RUNNING around or TALKING in the auditorium.  There is ABSOLUTELY no food or drink allowed in the auditorium or while you are in costumes.  Auditorium is for rehearsing/watching, dressing room is for chatting and changing.  No running around the school either.  We expect good behavior from our dancers.

Dancers, this is your opportunity to watch the whole production.  Please remember you are not allowed backstage to watch during performances.  You will be in the dressing room unless you are on stage.

If possible, please try to not bring any additional children with you that night.

When your dance is done, you may leave.

Tech rehearsal is the only time/place to pick up comp tickets.

Photos will be available for pickup also.

Parents, PLEASE stay and check in if you are helping backstage, costumes, or with tickets so you can learn that part before Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY: Dress Rehearsal
This year we will have a small audience, as we are allowing some groups to attend.  We are treating it as a performance, so full dress/makeup/hair of course.  Please wear nude leotards.

Dancers arrive at 5:30 for warmup.  Party scene/buffoons/mice/soldiers (younger dancers) don't need to be there till 6:15.  No one should arrive later than 6:15.  BE ON TIME.

Parents can watch from the auditorium for free, but remember, we are treating this like a performance, no dancers allowed in the auditorium that night.

If dancers from Act I would like to leave when they are finished, they may.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY: performances
Dancers please arrive at 5:30 to warm up.  6:15 for party scene/soldiers/buffoons/mice (younger dancers).
Dancers should arrive with hair and makeup done, in nude leos.

If your part of the performance is over, you may leave.

NO DANCERS ALLOWED IN THE AUDITORIUM unless they want to use their comp ticket or buy a ticket (space allowing) after intermission if they  are done.

Dancers need to stay in the dressing room when they are not on stage.

SATURDAY MATINEE PERFORMANCE:
Dancers should arrive at 12:30, 1:15 for the party scene/soldiers/buffons/mice.
Same rules as Thursday and Friday.

We will need help afterwards packing up costumes and loading the trailer.

We may meet up at Village Inn afterwards for a casual get together (pay your own way) if people are interested.

Party Scene videos

Parents of dancers in the party scene, it would be nice if your dancer took a couple minutes to watch other productions  to get a feel for the story.

Here and here are two short clips from the Royal Ballet's Nutcracker - have them watch and pay particular attention to the children in the background.  Look at how they move around, fiddle with things, stand in groups, and aren't just watching the adults.

It's always a good thing to watch the great ballets!  You can look up other party scenes if you want to and see how other ballet companies do their scenes differently.

Publicity

The performances are coming up fast!  We have placed some posters at city hall, libraries, schools, and local businesses.  If you would like the graphic to share with family and friends, here they are:

Click here for a large file size graphic (better for printing). If you want to print these at a photo place, be aware that you need to check the crop (use the crop tool to put it where you want/make sure words aren't cut off) and that some sizes will work better than others.

Click here for a smaller file,  better for emailing, posting on facebook /blogs/instagram or pinning.

I also made some PDFs to download and print if you would like:

5. Thanks to the parents who have stepped up to help lately!  We cannot do this without parent help!  Parent help is not only expected, but is crucial for the success of this production.

6. The poster is up!  I will be keeping it at the top of this blog in case people google us.  Downloadable graphics and info will be available for you to share soon.

Picture Day Reminder and Guidelines

Nutcracker picture day is tomorrow!
Schedule here, order form here.

General Picture taking rules:

Dancers must come at their assigned time in order to have time to put on their costume and be ready for pictures.

Please come with hair and make-up done.   This is a great opportunity to practice performance hair and makeup!  Lipstick should be applied after you are in costume, and removed before you take it off.

Remember soldiers should be wearing black shoes.

Meet at C&C for costumes, then we will go to the photography studio.

Please come in your nude leotard.  We do not have enough changing rooms to accommodate everyone.

Dancing Bras only (if needed).  We do not want to see your bra.  Don’t try to hide it.  We can still see it.  Use a dancer’s bra.
No Jewelry.  This means earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.
No Fingernail polish! (if you have it on your toes that’s okay)

Remember you may not eat or drink in your costume.

Hair and Makeup Guidelines

This is a repost of last year's hair and makeup post.  Nothing significant has changed, but please read through to make sure you are familiar with our guidelines.

Make-up:  Dancers should wear eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush and lipstick.  All make-up should be in neutral tones that compliment your daughter's skin tone.  No purples please.  Lips should be also in natural tones (yes, you may use pink or a red, just not bright reds or pinks that look unnatural).  Snow should have a subtler lipstick color.
Apply Lipstick after your costume is on.  Remove Lipstick before you take your costume off!!
Hair:  Hair should be pulled back into a professional ballet bun.*  No bangs, curls, bump styles, or hair ornaments.  Hair should be SLICKED back with no part.  NO frizzies or flyaways.  Anna reports that the cheapest gels work the best for that and be generous with it! :)  The point of a slick bun is to create a nice, clean, UNIFORM appearance.  Hair nets for the buns are not necessary for photos, but need to be worn for dress rehearsal/performances (you can get them at Sally's).
Proper bun height and more info below:

Photo from here.  This bun is a good height, but not slicked back/neat enough.
More bun examples here and here.

*Buffoons/Party girls/Soldiers see exception below.  Boys should have hair neatly combed.  Boys don't need makeup for photos, but may need a little for the performance.
*Exceptions: these are the only exceptions
Make-up:
Buffoons- Make-up should be done in neutral tones with an accent of pink or purple on the eyes and/or cheeks (no purple on cheeks.  Your lips should be pink-but not unnatural.  You are suppose to look like happy candy!)
Soldiers- Make-up should be done in neutral tones.  We will add round cheeks when you arrive.  Please bring a red lipstick so that we can apply it for you in a heart shape.
Hair:
Party Girls:  Please come with party girl hair.  Half up/Half down with ringlet curls (more information here, any questions ask Angela).
Buffoons:  2 Buns  on top of head.  Not messy buns.

Soldiers:  Soldiers should have their hair in a crossing braid style bun.  Click HERE for instructions and photos, but note that the bun in the photos is still a little bit too high.  It must be really low to go under the hat.
(2008 - Limping off stage after their battle with the mice)

Photo order forms

Here are the order forms!  Click HERE to download them.  You need one order form per costume.  Where it says 'class' put 'Spanish, Waltz, Mice' etc.  The metal collage prints are no longer available.

If you can have your order form printed and all ready with a check made out to Edge of Expression Photography and that will make Friday easier for everyone! :)

Remember that the location is where we did pre-registration right by C&C's studio (10118 S. Redwood).

Also, we still NEED two or more parents to help with checking in costumes during picture day!  Let us know ASAP if you can help!  (email or comment).

**New, updated order form!  We have a snowflake template for some options designed for Nutcracker!

(Also, if you have trouble printing the form, make sure you check your page setup in the print menu and choose 'portrait' instead of landscape)

Parent Meeting Notes

Thanks so much to all parents who attended Saturday's meeting.  For those who weren't there, or if you need to review/mark your calendar, here is what was discussed:

Dates: There are a couple of dates that you should put on your calendar now. Dancers may not miss these days:

  • Pictures (November 7): We will be using a photographer for group/individual photos. The cost will be about $17 for 2 5x7’s (or it may be 1 5x7 and 1 4x6, exact prices coming soon) Other package options will be available as well! It is mandatory for your dancer to show up...but optional to buy pictures. Picture times will be announced here shortly, but they will be in the afternoon, between about 4:00 - 6:30.
  •  TBA Rehearsals: November 14th -  22nd  On the schedule these dates still say TBA - We will be having rehearsals during this time, but they aren't set yet until we see which numbers need the most work.   So clear your schedules, please!

  • December 1 - 6 is NUTCRACKER WEEK!  We have Tech rehearsal Monday, Dress rehearsal Wednesday, performances Thursday and Friday nights, and a matinee performance on Saturday.  YOUR DANCER MAY NOT MISS ANY DAY DURING THIS WEEK FOR ANY REASON.

We do expect assistance from the parents in some way. This is a huge undertaking and we cannot do it without your help.  Signups were passed around for some assignments, expect to see them here soon to finish filling in slots.

Fees: Your $25 costume rental fee is due today!

Ad Donation Fee: This $25 fee is due by picture day (November 7). You may get a company to place an ad or you may pay the fee yourself and be listed as a 'Friend of South Pointe Ballet'.  Ad sizes are half page in the program (which means 1/4 sheet of paper, oriented horizontally).  Please turn in the bottom of the ad sheet along with a check made out to South Pointe Ballet.   The actual ad graphics may be emailed to Erin Summers (address on the ad sheet), or hard copy/business cards may be turned in with the ad sheet (need another copy of  the ad sheet?  Click here).

If all fees are not paid by November 14. We will have to have a chat to let you know that your dancer will not be performing.  Of course we don't want to see that happen, but it takes quite a bit of money to put on a ballet at this level. We need to have the funds to pay for the costumes, scenery and school by certain deadlines. If we don’t have the money...then we can’t pay our part and your dancer will not be performing. Please, turn everything in on time.

Tickets. Each dancer will be given 2 complimentary tickets.  The tickets will be given out at dress rehearsal.

Instead of selling group tickets (for church groups, etc) for performance nights, we are only selling those for the Wednesday night's dress rehearsal. Tickets will be $1 each. This is a dress rehearsal so we may stop and mark or re-run a scene; so please let them know this if you have a group coming.

Set Construction Help:  Anyone else who told me they would like to help with set construction, leave your email in a comment or email south pointe ballet.  We aren't sure in which ways we will need help yet, but need some willing hands ready to go just in case!

And another reminder to NOT MISS REHEARSALS!

Thank you parents for supporting your dancers and this production!

Change to Friday's rehearsal

**A change to this weekend's rehearsal:

Friday, instead of Snow AND Act 2 from 6:30 - 7:30, we only need
Arabian, Russian, Buffoons + Mother Ginger, and Dolls
No snow (or other Act 2 numbers) rehearsal Friday.

I have updated the rehearsal schedule post to show this.

**Don't forget the parent's meeting at 1:00 on Saturday! $25 fee due on or before then.

**Also, we have had a few too many absences already!
Dancers need to be AT ALL REHEARSALS.  Remember, you may only miss up to 3 TOTAL.  If you know you will not be able to attend, please let Angela know, but that still counts as a missed rehearsal.  We shouldn't have any no-shows at rehearsals.  We want this performance to be awesome, and it's hard to rehearse with dancers missing.

Getting Ready!

Are you prepared?

There are a few items that you should have ready for the Nutcracker performances:

For Girls:
  • Nude leotard.  All dancers should have one to make changing in and out of your costume more comfortable.   We can't have people changing in the bathrooms, so everyone has to change in the dressing room.
  • Dance Bra. The kind with clear straps and nude cups. Regular bras are not allowed on stage.
  • Hair net for your bun (easy to find at Sally's or dance stores). This doesn't apply to party girls.
  • Clean pink tights with no runs or holes.  Buy an extra pair or two now to save for performances!
  • Character Shoes-for Russian dancers only
  • Black Jazz shoes-Soldiers only
For Boys:
  • Black jazz shoes for boy dancers in the party scene
